SVF is located in Colorado's San Luis Valley, which is one of the largest and highest alpine valleys in the world. The San Luis Valley is well known for its low incidence of potato pests and diseases. | Sunny Valley Farms, Inc. has been in operation since 1948, when Craig and Irene Harney began growing seed potatoes in Colorado's San Luis Valley. Since then, the farm has expanded to 1600 acres, and has remained on the forefront of new developments in agricultural practices and farm management. The farm is currently owned by Craig's grandson, Ernest Ford. Ernest Ford received his degree in Soil Science from the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo in 1998 (see related link). For the past three decades, Sunny Valley Farms, Inc. has enjoyed a fine reputation as a quality seed potato producing company due to the stewardship of Vickie and her late husband, David Ford. |
| Faced with a large U.S. potato crop and subseqent declining prices in 1999, Vickie Ford as a representative of Sunny Valley Farms, Inc. and a core group of other San Luis Valley potato growers formed one of the first limited liability potato marketing companies in the nation. Through the efforts of this innovative group, the grower return for members' potatoes has consistently remained above the average San Luis Valley and national market average.
Also in 2000, Sunny Valley Farms, Inc. and eight other seed potato producers joined together to form Spudseed.com, LLC. This is also an innovative marketing tool, as members' seed potatoes, which compromise over fifty different varieties, are listed on Spudseed's web site. Seed potato shoppers can view potato variety inventories online, and then book seed purchases without having to call many producers on the phone to find what they need. It is truly "one-stop-shopping" for seed potatoes. |
